I have the urge to be a vegetarian a couple of years ago and the urge is getting stronger, especially since I watched a documentary film on National Geography last week, depicting the lives of a particular family in China and how they celebrated major festivals, one of which showed the family slaughtering a pig he reared to celebrate Lunar New Year.
When the man dragged the pig away from the pig sty, the pig struggled really hard in a bid to escape death.
The cries of the pig sent shivers down my spine; it sounded heartbreaking, really. If you were to see how much the pig struggled for its life, the thought of being a vegetarian would have flashed across your mind in that split second.
The pig knew that it was going to be killed, I swear. It's cries, it's eyes and it's struggles shows it all. No words could describe that. I could sense it's helplessness and my heart sank at that instant. I teared for the pig.
It's desire to live was gone with our desires to eat.
I do know that whatever I said above may sound senseless to some of you. After all, livestocks are reared to be slaughtered and be served as food. I am just being paranoid to instill speech bubbles into the pig and presume that it is feeling sad. Just avoid watching films or shows depicting animals being slaughtered and I will be fine.
Who can resist grilled honey baby ribs, beef tenderloin with roasted potatoes in brown sauce, chinese roasted duck, sweet and sour pork, black pepper chicken chop and the list goes on.
I admit that I have a big problem trying to resist them as I grew up eating a fair portion meat. Moreover, being a vegetarian does bring a lot inconvenience; vegetarian food isn't widely available. Being a vegetarian also mean mean that joining friends for parties and gathering will be difficult. On top of it, being a vegetarian will mean that you are not able to eat most (if not all) of the roadside food when you are traveling, and I definately do not encourage it as I personally feel that the best way to know a country's culture is to know the people's lifestyle, including their diet.
However, that does not mean that I will watch the show, feel sad about it and then continue eating tonnes of meat again. I have decided to do something about it, and this is my short term goal; to be a social meat eater. I intend to be a social meat eater; meaning I will only eat meat during social gatherings, events or otherwise.
Meanwhile, I will try my best, within my capable means to reduce the amount of meat I consume, by first cutting down on my intake of red meat (which I am already doing so) and then omit them from my daily diet.
I know being a social meat eater is still far from being a vegetarian entirely, however I believe the reduction in the intake of meat will help to kill a pig or two lesser every year (at least I hope so).
The life cycle in every living being proves one thing, that all of us are born to die. However, I do not want to be the reason behind someone else's death; whether they are human or not.
(I really do feel like a sinner at times.)
As the chinese saying goes, "人是求生,不是求死". I believe this statement refers to not only human being, but all other living things.
I have searched YouTube in hope of finding a similar video, in an attempt to let you guys know the ordeals the animals go through, and how I feel upon watching it.
However, I could not find one that shows the facial expression of the pig (which really tells a lot), and I guess this is the best I could find.
Caution: The following video is definately NOT for the weak hearted.
Note: I do understand that most pigs and other livestocks which are slaughtered in the abattoir are killed more humanely, however I believe the ordeal they go through and the moments before death are somewhat similar. After all, who would want to die an unnatural death?
This is not the worst video I have seen. I have seen on National Geography (yet again), how a cow knelt down on it's hind legs begging not to be brought to the temple to be sacrificed, and the cow was really crying. I saw tears coming out of its eyes, literally.
And there are more stories to be told ...
