Two months ago, while I was driving on a two lane road at Bukit Batok during after office hours, I almost ran over a motorcyclist. This was what happened. The lane on the right allows car to turn right, and there was a long queue for it. One of the cars, a Mercedes suddenly swerved out to the left lane without turning on the signals. The Mercedes almost hit into a motorcycle, which was driving in between the two lanes, behind the Mercedes.
In a bid to avoid the Mercedes hitting him, the motorcyclist made an abrupt turn to his left, and that resulted in him flying off his bike and landing right in front of me. (I was driving on the left lane at that point in time.) Had I not braked in time, I would have run over him and his motorcycle.
Moreover, the tendency of multiple collisions was high, since the there were a number of vehicles behind me, and that the road was slippery after a heavy rain. Meanwhile, the driver of the Mercedes sped off without a trace, and I could not even see his car plate number.
Being a new driver who almost got into a car accident, I was in a state of shock. Thankfully a fellow motorcyclist went forward and helped the motorcyclist (who fell off his bike), get on his bike.
As it happened just beside the bus stop, I managed to make a detour from there to avoid hogging the traffic (as it was pretty congested by then), and I never knew whether the motorcyclist was able to ride back safely.
An afterthought: I should have alighted and checked if the driver was alright, even though I wasn’t the reason behind the near accident. That would have put me at ease, instead of me wondering how he’s doing now.
